Why Is It So Important To Have Your Stump Ground Down?

Lynn Lee

You had a tree taken down, and now only the stump remains. You might be tempted to just leave the stump there and let it deteriorate on its own, over time. But this is not a smart approach. You should instead hire a stump grinding company to come grind down the stump. Here is why this task needs to be handled.

1. Stumps can be a tripping hazard.

You might figure you'll remember the stump is there, but what happens if, one night at 2 am, you have to go outside for some unforeseen reason? In the dark, and in your drowsiness, you would not want to trip over the stump. You don't want a friend or neighbor to fall over the stump when walking through your yard, either. That accident could cause a big bill for your homeowner's insurance company and a lot of headaches for you! Grinding the stump down is simply the safest thing to do as a homeowner.

2. Stumps can continue to spread disease.

Did you knock the tree down because it was diseased? If it died a mysterious death, there is a good chance that was due to an infectious fungal disease. Many of these diseases can continue to be spread by dead and decaying wood, such as that found in the tree stump. You don't want the stump continuing to infect other trees in your yard and in neighbors' yards! Grinding the stump down is doing all other trees a favor in terms of disease prevention.

3. Stumps can grow shoots.

The roots of the tree are probably still "alive." In one last, desperate attempt to stay viable, the stump may send up some shoots and small stems, which can even develop leaves on them. Clearly, this won't be able to sustain the tree, but it won't look very nice. A stump with shoots coming up out of it looks quite messy and unkempt, so grind it away before this has a chance to happen.

4. Stumps can attract critters.

Some critters are cute and fun to have in your hard, like hummingbirds and rabbits. Others, like carpenter ants and termites, are major nuisances. A stump could attract these pests as it starts to deteriorate. Then, termites don't have to go very far to reach your home from a stump in your yard! It's best to grind down the stump before the wood-eating critters find it.
