Everything You Need To Know About Trimming Your Trees

Lynn Lee

Trees are living, breathing things. They provide shade for your home and oxygen for you to breathe. Taking care of them is essential to the safety of the entire plant, but it can be hard to know what to do, especially if they need to be trimmed or, worse, cut down.

Do you need to trim your trees?

You need to trim your trees when they do not look healthy. Dead branches, broken branches, and branches that touch the surrounding trees are all susceptible to insects and disease. Having a professional tree trimming service clean the area up will improve the tree's health. Likewise, you should trim your trees when they look misshapen or overgrown.

How much of a tree can you trim?

While it can vary between species of trees, you can typically trim about 25 percent of a tree at a time without harming it. It is best to trim a tree when it is dormant in order to cause it the least amount of stress. Dormant months vary throughout the country.

What's the difference between trimming and pruning?

Trimming a tree refers to keeping its overall shape neat and tidy, while pruning is meant to remove any dead branches and to promote healthy growth. Both services can be performed by your local tree trimming service company.

Is it bad for a tree branch to touch the roof of a house?

It is not only bad for the tree to touch the roof of a house, but it is also detrimental to the house. When tree branches rub against a house or its roof, the bark of the tree is damaged. This can lead to water damage and pest infestation for the tree.

Furthermore, the branches can damage the home's asphalt shingles. Shingles have a rough, gravel coating that is designed to help protect the roof. Branches can scrape off this coating, causing the roof to age prematurely.

How do you know when a tree is dead?

There are multiple ways to tell if a tree has died. The tree failing to grow leaves in the spring is a fairly obvious sign, but there are subtle signs as well. Large branches falling off the tree, bark that is brittle and is easily removed from the trunk, and a trunk that has started to decay are all signs that the tree has died. An arborist can advise you if the tree is simply under stress and can still be saved.

Work in conjunction with your local tree trimming service to take care of your trees and trim them when necessary to keep them as healthy as possible.
