Four Steps To Follow Once A Tree Falls On Your Property

Lynn Lee

A fallen tree on your property requires prompt removal, especially if it damaged buildings that will need repair. The following can help you understand the basic steps of this process.

1. Damage Assessment

The first thing that must be done is an assessment of the damage, particularly if it has fallen on a structure such as your home. Not only will the insurance company need to review the damage, but the tree removal service must perform an assessment so that they can draft a removal plan that minimizes the chances of further damage. This may include using equipment to lift the tree off of a building or even bringing in the utility company to ensure there are no electrical hazards.

2. Branch Removal

Once the tree is positioned to minimize further damage, proper removal can begin. The first step taken is usually to remove the lattice work of branches running up the tree. This clears them out of the way so that the trunk can then be properly sectioned. Your removal service will generally remove the branches with hand saws, then feed them into a mulcher for easier disposal. You can even ask to keep some of the mulch if you would like to use it in your landscape.

3. Trunk Sectioning

Trunk sectioning is when the bulk of the remaining tree is removed. For smaller trees with some value in their trunk, the trunk may simply be sectioned off from the roots and then hauled away. For most landscape trees, though, it is much more expedient to cut the trunk into sections that are a couple of feet long. These can then be loaded up and hauled away for an additional fee. If you have use for the sections, such as for a wood burning stove, you can opt to keep them instead of having them disposed of.

4. Root Ball Disposal

The root ball is often treated separately compared to the rest of the tree, which means it will be left on your property unless you specifically order its removal. If the root ball wasn't ripped from the ground, you can just have the broken stump ground down. If it was ripped up, removal is needed. Root balls can be quite large and difficult to remove, and they are also difficult to cut into smaller sections. Often, removal of a large root ball means using equipment to lift it into a dump truck or even onto a flatbed for disposal transport.
