Have a Lot of Overgrown Trees in Your Yard? Pruning Methods That Can Be Used

Lynn Lee

Having a lot of trees in your yard is beneficial since they improve the aesthetics of your home and provide you with shade. If your trees are overgrown, however, you should have them pruned. This will keep them looking much nicer and also keep them healthy. Hire a tree pruning service to do this for you to ensure it is done correctly. There are different pruning methods they can use, two of which are listed below.

Clean Pruning Method

If your trees are mature, the pruning service may choose what is known as a clean pruning method. With this, they inspect the trees and remove branches that are broken, diseased, or dead. This not only prevents these branches from falling and injuring someone, but if they are diseased, it will help prevent the disease from spreading to other parts of the tree. If insects are found on the removed branches, the pruning service will inspect the rest of the tree for more insects.

With this pruning method, no live branches are removed. A saw is often used with the clean pruning method for very thick branches. If the branches are very thin, the contractor may use pruning shears to do the job. If the branches are only a few inches thick, a lopper may be used, which is a hand shear but with a much longer blade and more cutting power.

Crown Thinning Pruning Method

Over time, the crown, which is the top area of the tree, can become thick. If this happens, sunlight, water, and air cannot get through the thick foliage down to the roots. A thick crown puts pressure on the tree as it becomes very heavy, and the tree can also become misshapen.

During crown thinning, the contractor will not remove too many branches from the crown, or this could harm the tree. This is one reason to hire a professional. If the trees are tall, they will have a truck with a boom to lift up to the top of the tree safely. The contractor can use pruners to cut the limbs as only thinner limbs are generally removed. The contractor will only remove thick branches if they are diseased or dying.

The tree pruning service that you hire can tell you of more tree pruning methods that can be used, such as crown raising and crown restoration. They can also give you more information on how the pruning is done.
